Celebrating Amethyst - the Birthstone for February

Writer's picture: Tori FosterTori Foster

Amethyst is one of the most beloved gemstones, known for its stunning purple hues. This captivating variety of quartz has been cherished for centuries, from ancient civilizations to modern jewellery enthusiasts.

The Meaning and Symbolism of Amethyst

Often associated with clarity, wisdom, and spiritual growth, amethyst has long been regarded as a protective and calming stone. Ancient Greeks believed it could prevent intoxication, while in medieval times, it was worn by royalty and clergy as a symbol of purity and power. Amethyst is also the birthstone for February.

The Beauty of Amethyst in Jewellery

Amethyst has a lovely range of colours - probably most know as a bright purple stone, it can range from a really soft lavender to a dark, deep violet. You can sometimes find green Amethyst or Ametrine, which is Amethyst and Citrine (a yellow stone) - this creates a stone with clear banding of colours.

Amethyst looks beautiful in both silver and gold settings, making it a perfect choice for rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Whether set as a delicate accent or a bold statement piece, amethyst adds a touch of elegance and mystery to any design.

I love working with Amethyst for its captivating colour. I don't use a lot of purple (which is odd because it is my favourite colour) but when I do, Amethyst is my first thought.

Caring for Your Handmade Amethyst Jewellery

To keep your amethyst jewellery looking its best, store it away from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause fading. Clean it gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth to maintain its brilliance. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners to preserve its natural beauty.

Gemstone of the Month Project

Amethyst is the first stone I chose for my Gemstone of the Month project. I chose it for two reasons - so I could have a February birthstone piece ready for February and because I realised I had no purple jewellery in my Pocklington studio and wanted to change this!
